Thanks to the brothers McMenamin and others, Portland has its share of second run movie theaters, but the Academy Theater definitely stands out from the crowd. Sure, their ticket prices are inexpensive, and they serve beer, wine and food (including delicious slices from Flying Pie pizzeria), but that's not what sets them apart. Don't let the gorgeous 1940s decor fool you - this is the most family-friendly theater in town. Not only do they have regularly scheduled children's matinees, but they have amazing ONSITE babysitting. For just $7.50 per child per movie (yup - per movie, not by the hour!) you can take in a grown-up flick and peacefilly sip a glass of wine while your kids play safely upstairs. My daughter loves it there so much she actually cries when we tell her it's time to leave! (Just call in advance to reserve a spot because it fills up quickly.)
